Inside Scoop | See My Child

I want people to know that my child doesn’t have a physical disability or a mental health diagnoses. He is bright, generally well-behaved in public, social and very good at sports. But he is affected by trauma–his hurts are on the inside. He is delayed emotionally and lacks coping skills. His behaviour is affected by fear, shame and anger. We parent him way differently than our children who do not have trauma in their history. It may seem backwards to traditional thinking, but his attachment and security are most important. He can’t always handle what other kids his age can. It takes more planning. Just because he’s been with us for 3 years and is thriving in many ways, doesn’t mean we aren’t still dealing with a lot of challenges on a daily basis.
